This study was written in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, in the Faculty of Philosophy, Columbia University. The study is on the life and poetry of the poet-priest Saigyō (1118-1190), with translations of all 94 of him poems in the imperial anthology, Shinkokinshu completed in 1206.
