This article conducts a survey of theory and research concerning the determinants of an individual's perceptions of the risk of formal sanctions as a consequence of criminal behavior. The specific questions considered are as follows: (1) How accurate is people's knowledge about criminal sanctions? (2) What is the impact of risk perceptions on the likelihood of criminal behavior? (3) What is the impact of criminal experience on the modification of risk perceptions?
