Hormones are chemical messengers that are released into the bloodstream and act on target tissue throughout the body, including the brain. Research conducted over the last several decades indicate that sex and stress hormones released by the gonads and adrenal glands, respectively, are important modulators of cognitive function. The current chapter provides an overview of the effects of these hormones on brain areas critical for learning and memory and on associated behaviors.
