Abstract

Delirium in older adult hospitalized patients is an acute and fluctuating decline in attention and cognition that is known to have poor clinical outcomes. Characteristics of delirium include a rapid onset, a fluctuating course, evidence of a physical cause, and disturbances of consciousness, memory, thought, perception, and behavior. In 2012 and 2013, the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) published two systematic reviews (SRs) on delirium. A three-step search strategy was utilized in this review. Data were extracted from papers included in the review by using the standardized data extraction tool from JBI-Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument (MAStARI). A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between multicomponent interventions and delirium outcomes. The studies included in the review reinforce the evidence that targeted nonpharmacological multicomponent intervention strategies were generally successful in preventing delirium in non-intensive care unit (N-ICU) hospitalized older patients.
