Abstract
Libraries have promoted an informed citizenry and bridged divides as cornerstones of democracy ever since Benjamin Franklin founded the Library Company of Philadelphia in 1731. Today’s libraries serve as civic commons, not only promoting unfettered access to a broad array of ideas but also catalyzing a more engaged citizenship.
