Abstract
We describe the observation of the polaronic transition of a system of electrons supported above a helium film. The electron mobility drops sharply by more than four orders of magnitude as the film thickness is reduced below ≈ 1000 Å. The transition was observed in the temperature range 0.4 ⩽
T ⩽ 1 K.
