Abstract
A summary of central and local Hungarian archival collections maintained by religious institutions, government agencies, and individuals, emphasizing documents related to the Habsburg monarchy. With the crowning of Ferdinand I as king in 1526, Hungary joined in a semiautonomous union with Austria that lasted, with marked ambivalence, until 1918. The Hungarian National Archives in Budapest contain court documents, government records, property records, noble family archives, personal papers of parliamentary, judicial, and military leaders, and documents of organizations such as the Freemasons. Smaller but significant collections in regional or county archives, municipal archives, local court archives, diocesan archives, and repositories of other religious communities, including Franciscans, Jesuits, Calvinists, Baptists, and Jews, allow researchers to access information reflective of all aspects of daily life in Hungary.
