Abstract
The small calcitic spheres, common in the liassic deposits of the Tethyan region, generally referred to as
Stomiiosphaera minutissima are in fact referrable to
Schizosphaerella punctulata. The dark inner layer of the calcareous wall of
S. minutissima represents the two interlocked, diagenetically modified valves of
S. punctulata. The hyaline fibro-radiate outer (and sometimes inner) layer(s) is (are) of secondary origin.
Stomiosphaera minutissima (
Colom) a été décrite comme un nannofossile calcaire de 20 à 50 μm de diamètre, caractérisé par une coque à paroi double qui, examinée au microscope photonique, apparaît formée d'une couche interne noire, très fine, entourée d'une couche épaisse de calcite fibro-radiée. Une couche interne, également de calcite fibro-radiée, peut aussi être développée chez certains spécimens. L'examen au M.E.B. révèle que la couche noire de
S. minutissima correspond aux deux valves emboîtées de
Schizosphaerella punctulata. La couche externe, et l'éventuelle couche interne, à structure fibroradiée sont d'origine diagénéntique.
