Abstract
This article focuses on the clinical and conceptual contributions of three major
schools of family therapy to the treatment of black families: 1)
structural/eco-structural, 2) Bowenian, and 3) paradoxical/strategic/systemic.
It is important to note that although these are presented here as distinct
schools, there has already been considerable cross-fertilization within these
models, with many family therapists contributing to more than one approach. Ways
in which these models can be integrated into an overall treatment approach with
black families are discussed.
