Autonomous transport protocols for content-based networks

Abstract

In this paper, we argue for a new approach to reliable transport protocols in which connections are established between endpoints in a generic content-based network. In such a network, endpoints are named by content and mapped to host addresses using a content-based location and routing sheme. We identify two key design priniples for autonomous protools: (i) an endpoint name spae deoupled from the network host address space and (ii) relaxed end-to-end semantis, whih allows intermediate nodes in the network to be dynamial ly involved in the transport. We use these priniples to propose a transport protool with dynami onnetion splitting for reliable ommuniation in ontent-based networks. Autonomous transport layer protools deouple ommuniation endpoints from the network addressing and routing, therefore they are partiularly suitable for handling endpoint mobility. They can be deployed in a wide range of arhitetures, from networks of embedded systems or sensors to overlay networks over the Internet.
